Ten Ostreobium (Ulvophyceae) strains from Great Barrier Reef corals as a resource for algal endolith biology and genomics

چکیده

Ostreobium is a genus of siphonous green algae that lives as an endolith in carbonate substrates under extremely limited light conditions and has recently been gaining attention due to its roles reef budgets association with corals. Knowledge about this remains fairly the scarcity strains available for physiological studies. Here, we report on 10 isolated from coral skeletons Great Barrier Reef. Phenotypic diversity showed differences gross morphology few structures. Phylogenetic analyses tufA rbcL put context lineages identified previously through environmental sequencing. The chloroplast genomes our are all around 80 kbp length show genome structure highly conserved, only insertions (some containing putative protein-coding genes) differing between strains. addition these Reef toolkit will help develop model species endolithic growth, low-light photosynthesis coral-algal associations.

Utility of Photochemical Traits as Diagnostics of Thermal Tolerance amongst Great Barrier Reef Corals

Light availability is considered a key factor regulating the thermal sensitivity of reef building corals, where excessive excitation of photosystem II (PSII) further exacerbates pressure on photochemical pathways already compromised by heat stress. Coral symbionts acclimate to changes in light availability (photoacclimation) by continually fine-tuning the photochemical operating efficiency of P...

Environmental Records from Great Barrier Reef Corals: Inshore versus Offshore Drivers

The biogenic structures of stationary organisms can be effective recorders of environmental fluctuations. These proxy records of environmental change are preserved as geochemical signals in the carbonate skeletons of scleractinian corals and are useful for reconstructions of temporal and spatial fluctuations in the physical and chemical environments of coral reef ecosystems, including The Great...

Summer Hot Snaps and Winter Conditions: Modelling White Syndrome Outbreaks on Great Barrier Reef Corals

Coral reefs are under increasing pressure in a changing climate, one such threat being more frequent and destructive outbreaks of coral diseases. Thermal stress from rising temperatures has been implicated as a causal factor in disease outbreaks observed on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, and elsewhere in the world. Here, we examine seasonal effects of satellite-derived temperature on the ab...

Flexibility in algal endosymbioses shapes growth in reef corals.

The relation between corals and their algal endosymbionts has been a key to the success of scleractinian (stony) corals as modern reef-builders, but little is known about early stages in the establishment of the symbiosis. Here, we show that initial uptake of zooxanthellae by juvenile corals during natural infection is nonspecific (a potentially adaptive trait); the association is flexible and ...
